1. Australian Rules training drills - shortball drills

   1.1  Loose ball 1-on-1
For coaching footballers aged U/8 to senior, you will need 8 players, 1 cone and 1 football. The length of this drill is 15 metres for seniors, when coaching juniors you should shorten this drill to a more appropriate length. This is a handball drill to practice mid-length handballing and short kicking. Use this drill early in the training session, or perhaps in between longer exercises for recovery.

Ages Senior, U/16, U/14, U/12, U/10, U/8.

Skills Handball (average), Crumb. *Light contact or inferred pressure.
Purpose Being first to the ball is critical, as is attacking it fiercely. This drill makes players engage in a 1-on-1 duel to win the crumb.

   1.2  Handball while being tackled
For coaching footballers aged U/16 to senior, this drill requires 12+ players, 4 cones and 1 football. The length of this drill is 15 metres for seniors, when coaching juniors you should shorten this drill to a more appropriate length.Use this drill early in the training session, or perhaps in between longer exercises for recovery. Tackling is used, so consider players with injuries. This is a handball drill to practice mid-length handballing and tackling.

Skills *Competitive* Handball (average), Tackle.
Purpose When a player is being tackled, it's vital they don't let their opponent pin their arms and can give a handball to advantage rather than let the ball spill out loosely. This drill teaches players to position their body when being tackled so they can get an effective handball away rather than turnover the ball.

2. Australian Rules training drills - half oval drills

   2.1  Hard running handball
For coaching footballers aged U/16 to senior, you will need 16 players, 4 cones and 1 football. This is a handball drill to practice mid-length handballing. The length of this drill is 70 metres for seniors, when coaching juniors you should shorten this drill to a more appropriate length.Use this drill midway through the session.

Purpose Players who are tired after a strenuous effort such as a long bouncing run often dispose of the ball poorly. This drill is ideal for fitness and concentrating on disposal when tired.

   2.2  Kick to a lead or goal
For coaching footballers aged U/12 to senior, this drill requires 12+ players, 3 cones and 1 football. This is a kicking drill to practice short kicking, mid-length kicking, long kicking and goalkicking. Use this drill midway through the session. The length of this drill is 60 metres for seniors, when coaching juniors you should shorten this drill to a more appropriate length.

Skills Kicking, Goalkicking.
Purpose When a player with the ball is within range of goal, they sometimes need to decide whether to pass or take a shot. This drill teaches players to take the shot if they are within a comfortable distance and angle, otherwise find a leading forward.

3. Australian Rules training drills - full oval drills

   3.1  Full oval shadow pressure
For coaching footballers aged U/12 to senior, you will need 22 players and 2-3 footballs. Use this drill towards the end of training. The length of this drill is 200 metres for seniors, when coaching juniors you should shorten this drill to a more appropriate length. This drill practices short kicking, mid-length kicking, long kicking, goalkicking, quick handballing, mid-length handballing and long handballing.

Skills Kicking, Goalkicking, Handball. *Light contact or inferred pressure.
Purpose Staying close to an opponent takes concentration and effort. This drill practices manning-up on an opponent wherever they go on the ground, and gives penalties for lapses in concentration. It also teaches players to dispose of the ball when an opponent is at close quarters.

   3.2  Huddle and break
For coaching footballers aged senior, you will need 20 players, 3 cones and 2+ footballs. Use this drill towards the end of training. This drill practices short kicking, mid-length kicking, long kicking, goalkicking, quick handballing, mid-length handballing, long handballing and short kicking. The length of this drill is 200 metres for seniors, when coaching juniors you should shorten this drill to a more appropriate length.

Skills Kicking, Goalkicking, Handball, Crumb.
Purpose The huddle is a formation which sees all players bunched together as the full-back prepares for the kick-in. It's an effective way to play long and safe when looking to hold onto a lead, as it allows a team to gather numbers and be first to the kick-in area

   3.3  Direct to marking targets
For coaching footballers aged U/16 to senior, you will need 24 players, 9 cones and 4+ footballs. The length of this drill is 200 metres for seniors, when coaching juniors you should shorten this drill to a more appropriate length. This drill practices long kicking, goalkicking, quick handballing, mid-length handballing, contested marking, short kicking and short kicking. Use this drill towards the end of training.

Skills Kick (goal, long), Handball (average, quick), Contested Mark, Shepherd, Crumb.
Purpose Strong marking players should be supported by kicking long to them so they can contest 1-on-1. Every time a ball is handballed or kicked short, this give the defense time to close down the space up forward. This drill features long and direct kicks to targets, and creating run past these players to continue moving the ball on quickly.

   4.1  Extra man at the stoppage
For coaching footballers aged U/14 to senior, you will need 20 players, 4 cones and 1 football. The length of this drill is 70 metres for seniors, when coaching juniors you should shorten this drill to a more appropriate length.Use this drill towards the end of training. Tackling is used, so consider players with injuries. This drill practices short kicking, long kicking, quick handballing, contested marking, tackling, short kicking, short kicking and short kicking.

Skills *Competitive* Kick (short, long), Handball (quick), Contested Mark, Tackle, Shepherd, Ruck, Crumb.
Purpose When stoppages occur around the ground, you may find yourself in a situation where you have a free player. This player can be used as a tap option, or support for the tap option. Players practice exploiting this extra body to win the clearance.
