1. Aussie Rules training
drills - shortball drills
1.1 Rolling ball, rising handball
|

For coaching footballers aged U/10 to senior, you will need 8 players, 4 cones and
1 football. The length of this drill is 15 metres for seniors, when coaching juniors
you should shorten this drill to a more appropriate length. This is a handball drill
to practice mid-length handballing and short kicking. Use this drill early in the
training session, or perhaps in between longer exercises for recovery.

Purpose
|
A
crumbing player with their head over the ball must often dispose
of it immediately as they will be
hot. This drill teaches players to pick up an erratically bouncing
ball, to get
front and square of a crumber using a loud voice to guide them, and
to
handball on-the-up to a voice.

1.2 Backdoor switch handball
|
|
For coaching footballers aged U/14 to senior, this drill requires 15+ players, 6
cones and 2+ footballs. The length of this drill is 30 metres for seniors, when

this drill early in the training session, or perhaps in between longer exercises
for recovery. This is a handball drill to practice quick handballing, long handballing
and short kicking.

Purpose
|
When the field ahead is congested, as sideways switch is a good option as it opens
up space for players to lead into. This drill replicates a mark or free to a player,
who uses a player running through the backdoor who then switches laterally to an
open running player.

1.3 8-Point Front and Square Handball
|
|
For coaching footballers aged U/8 to senior, this drill requires 20+ players, 8
cones and 3+ footballs. This is a handball drill to practice quick handballing,

when coaching juniors you should shorten this drill to a more appropriate length.Use
this drill early in the training session, or perhaps in between longer exercises
for recovery.

|
|

- half oval drills
2.1 Lead to open space
|
|
For coaching footballers aged U/8 to senior, this drill requires 12 players, 4 cones
and 2+ footballs. Use this drill midway through the session. The length of this
drill is 80 metres for seniors, when coaching juniors you should shorten this drill
to a more appropriate length. This is a kicking drill to practice long kicking.

Purpose
|
Kicking to a player who is leading at 45 degrees is a difficult skill, as players
must judge their teammate's speed and angle, and put the ball to a spot they can
run onto. This drill practices kicking to players leading at 45 degrees, both defensively
and into attack with the flight of the ball.

2.2 Work around the marking player
|
|
For coaching footballers aged U/16 to senior, you will need 16 players, 6 cones
and 1 football. Use this drill midway through the session. This drill practices
long kicking, quick handballing, mid-length handballing and short kicking. The length
of this drill is 100 metres for seniors, when coaching juniors you should shorten
this drill to a more appropriate length.

|
This drill practices kicking long and accurately to a leading target, positioning
front and square to this target, and long handball to a running player.

|
|
For coaching footballers aged U/14 to senior, you will need 8 players, 5 cones and
5+ footballs. The length of this drill is 70 metres for seniors, when coaching juniors
you should shorten this drill to a more appropriate length.Tackling is used, so
consider players with injuries. This drill practices goalkicking, quick handballing,
tackling and short kicking. Use this drill midway through the session.

Purpose
|
Players must make more than one effort when the ball is in their area, however some
players have a tendancy to be lazy and stop after one effort. This drill makes players
recover quickly, simulating the sustained intensity required in a game situation,
plus they practice goakicking when tired from their effort.

- full oval drills
3.1 Rebound with crumb and 2-on-1
|
|
For coaching footballers aged U/16 to senior, you will need 25 players, 7 cones
and 2 footballs. The length of this drill is 200 metres for seniors, when coaching
juniors you should shorten this drill to a more appropriate length.Use this drill
towards the end of training. This is a kicking drill to practice mid-length kicking,
long kicking, goalkicking, contested marking and short kicking.

Purpose
|
The transition from attack to defense is best achieved by using the open or 'fat'
side of the ground. This drill practices quick ball movement whilst incorporating
stations to practice front and square positioning near goal, and decision making
in a 2-on-1 contest.
