1.1 Tackle, make a second effort
|

For coaching footballers aged U/16 to senior, this drill requires 6+ players, 1
cone and 1 football. The length of this drill is 5 metres for seniors, when coaching
juniors you should shorten this drill to a more appropriate length.Tackling is used,
so consider players with injuries. This resource develops long handballing and tackling.
Use this drill early in the training session, or perhaps in between longer exercises
for recovery.

Purpose
|
Players must learn to make several efforts when the ball is in dispute. It's easy
for a player to stay on the ground and watch the contest. This drill makes the player
get up quickly and produce a second effort after tackling.

|
|
For coaching footballers aged U/8 to senior, you will need groups of 6 players,
2 cones and 1+ footballs per group. The length of this drill is 20 metres for seniors,

this drill early in the training session, or perhaps in between longer exercises
for recovery. This is a kicking drill to practice short kicking.

Purpose
|
Players must learn to steady before kicking, otherwise they increase the likelihood
of executing poorly. This is often difficult after a player has run some distance,
as they may have become slightly exhausted. This drill teaches players to straighten,
steady and execute an accurate kick after a hard run.

1.3 Crumbing Circle
|
|
For coaching footballers aged U/14 to senior, this drill requires 12+ players and
2+ footballs. This resource develops quick handballing, mid-length handballing and
short kicking. The length of this drill is 40 metres for seniors, when coaching
juniors you should shorten this drill to a more appropriate length.Use this drill
early in the training session, or perhaps in between longer exercises for recovery.

2.1 Marking contest 4-on-2
|
|
For coaching footballers aged U/16 to senior, you will need 20 players, 8 cones
and 1 football. Tackling is used, so consider players with injuries. This drill
practices long kicking, quick handballing, mid-length handballing, contested marking,
tackling, short kicking and short kicking. Use this drill midway through the session.
The length of this drill is 100 metres for seniors, when coaching juniors you should
shorten this drill to a more appropriate length.

|

a marking contest, and running in numbers to draw opponents and get past them.

2.2 Handball around the Square in Threes
|
|
For coaching footballers aged U/8 to senior, you will need 15 players, 4 cones and
1+ footballs. Use this drill midway through the session. The length of this drill
is 80 metres for seniors, when coaching juniors you should shorten this drill to
a more appropriate length. This drill practices mid-length kicking, mid-length handballing
and long handballing.

Purpose
|
Players can form an effective attack by running in lines, using handball to get
past outnumbered opponents. This drill practices sharp, sideways handball whilst
running at speed, and good positioning to receive.

2.3 Sprint, suck it in, kick a goal.
|
|
For coaching footballers aged U/14 to senior, you will need 12 players, 4 cones
and 1-3 footballs. Use this drill midway through the session. This is a kicking
drill to practice goalkicking. The length of this drill is 50 metres for seniors,
when coaching juniors you should shorten this drill to a more appropriate length.

Purpose
|
When midfielders and defenders sprint forward and take an attacking mark within
goalscoring range, they will often be spent after the run, resulting in inaccuracy
in front of goals. This drill makes players sprint forward to present a marking
option, then relax and compose themselves before concentrating hard to kick the
goal while fatigued.

3.1 Switch into defense
|
|
For coaching footballers aged U/16 to senior, you will need 18 players, 6 cones
and 2 footballs. The length of this drill is 150 metres for seniors, when coaching
juniors you should shorten this drill to a more appropriate length. This is a kicking
drill to practice mid-length kicking and long kicking. Use this drill towards the
end of training.

Purpose
|
The switch can open up space for players up the ground, but can be dangerous. A
horizontal switch that is picked off by the opposition will often result in a goal.
To lessen the risk, this drill practices switching defensively away from opponents
rather than horizontally.

3.2 Switch competitive goalkicking race
|
|
For coaching footballers aged U/14 to senior, this drill requires 20+ players and
2 footballs. Use this drill towards the end of training. Tackling is used, so consider
players with injuries. This drill practices short kicking, mid-length kicking, long
kicking, goalkicking, quick handballing, mid-length handballing, long handballing,
contested marking, tackling, short kicking and short kicking.

Purpose
|
Following a switch, full advantage must be taken of the space by moving the ball
decisively. This drill practices long direct play following a switch, through a
contest to be the quickest to score a goal. It highlights how critical handling
errors can be.
