1. Australian Rules drills - shortball
drills

1.1 Tap and crumb
|

For coaching footballers aged U/8 to senior, you will need groups of 3 players and
2 footballs per group. The length of this drill is 2 metres for seniors, when coaching
juniors you should shorten this drill to a more appropriate length. This is a handball
drill to practice mid-length handballing and short kicking. Use this drill early
in the training session, or perhaps in between longer exercises for recovery.

Purpose
|

2.1 Backdoor infield from a stoppage
|
|
|
For coaching footballers aged senior, this drill requires 16+ players and 2+ footballs.
Tackling is used, so consider players with injuries. This drill practices short
kicking, mid-length kicking, long kicking, goalkicking, quick handballing, mid-length
handballing, long handballing, contested marking, tackling, short kicking, short
kicking and short kicking. Use this drill midway through the session. The length
of this drill is 80 metres for seniors, when coaching juniors you should shorten
this drill to a more appropriate length.

Purpose
|
At stoppages, defenders prefer to stand between the throw-ins/ups and the goal,
to avoid a tap forward into space. This can be overcome by moving the ball backwards
and infield to a running player, centralising the attack and thereby increasing
the area a forward to lead into.
